The Sacrifice

release date September 2012

A military love story set in Afghanistan 2009, it is a novel of governmental, religious, and social conflicts during a time of war which influences the relationship between a soldier shot down in a battle fighting the Taliban and the Afghan woman who rescues him from certain death to the detriment of her and her mother’s safety.

Lucas was inspired by her father who spent two years working in Afghanistan as a civilian contractor and was overcome by the generosity and love of the people there. She came to see, through his stories, how much the people of Afghanistan are incredibly misunderstood and stereotyped, especially after the events of 9/11- not everyone in a burkha or turban are the enemy.

Married to a former United States Marine, she consulted him on much of the language and protocols of the military. She also interviewed two Afghani women who were refugees and whose grandfather was the Governor of Kabul and was murdered by the mujahidin and conferred with a Marine who recently returned from a tour in Afghanistan.
