Told through multiple narrators and spanning forty years, Water Under the Bridge is a southern saga, exploring both the complex relationship between farmer and soil, and a family with its town. Uniquely woven with issues of race, class, and southern peculiarities, Little’s tale reminds the reader that a family’s legacy can be many things—a piece of earth, a familiar dwelling, a shared bond, or anything that continues to keep us connected.

Burrows: A Red River Mystery

Reavis Z. Wortham. Poisoned Pen, $24.95 (322p) ISBN 978-1-4642-0007-6

Wortham’s outstanding sequel to The Rock Hole (2011), likewise set in 1964 East Texas, finds Ned Parker uncomfortably adjusting to being merely a retired constable. Ned’s nephew, Cody, is settling into the job of new constable, while Ned’s grandson, Top, and great-niece, Pepper, are enjoying being bright, inquisitive 11-year-olds. Rural life isn’t exactly easy, but it’s predictable; people know themselves and what to expect of each other. The discovery of a headless corpse in the Red River and a butchered farm family nearby, the handiwork of an escaped lunatic, shoves the Parkers into a vortex of insanity that culminates in Cody and Dep. John Washington getting trapped in boobytrapped tunnels burrowed through the junk, including leftover bales of cotton, that fills the huge Cotton Exchange warehouse. Wortham combines the gonzo sensibility of Joe R. Lansdale and the elegiac mood of To Kill a Mockingbird to strike just the right balance between childhood innocence and adult horror. Author tour. Agent: Jeanie Pantelakis, Sullivan Maxx Literary Agency. (July)

About the Georgia Author of the Year Awards

The GAYA has grown in prestige and participation since its inception in 1964 by the Dixie Council of Authors and Journalists. The Awards changed hands in 1990 to Georgia Writers Association (GWA), a statewide literary organization sponsored by Kennesaw State University under the executive directorship of Dr. Margaret Walters. GAYA nominations are judged by prominent authors from across the country, and submissions are evaluated for their narrative quality, creativity, enduring message, and ability to evoke emotion. The competition guidelines are revised each year to parallel the changing literary marketplace, and the GAYA honors both independently published authors and those whose books are published by traditional publishing houses.
